Yup....just a really large relay with 200 amp contacts.....they don't last forever...a hydrolocked engine will do the same thing, right along with a dead starter or corroded cables.
Get your test light and probe the stud on the starter...push the start button and see If it lights up.

Thank you for the reply - but it does seem to be the starter , from what I'm reading I have to pull motor to get starter off can it be taken off without going this far.

No you do NOT have to pull the motor.
Unhook the battery, Take the 2 bolts out of the starter that holds it to the engine, and pull the starter out. Do not worry about the chain in there and gear-they will not go anywhere.
I at times have to take my foot rest and shifter off to get the starter out. One wing I had to take the muffler off at the headers to get it out.

After you get the starter out you can bench test it to see if the starter is bad. Since starter is out-look at the diy on this forum and clean up the inside of the starter. Really simple and very dirty in there.

Thanks guys -plan on just taking starter out ,did find out its best to leave on side stand rather than the center stand ,just makes it easier to get out and put back in.

clicking has nothing to do with the main fuse..could be hydrolocked engine, bad solenoid, or bad starter or bad circuit between the solenoid and starter.

take plugs out and try it..stop switch gas will squirt out if hydrolocked if it does put plugs back in and try it again..leave petcock closed during testing... but you have a carb/petcock issue

jump across the solenoid top bolts..key on..if it turns bad solenoid

next jump starter directly from a good battery..if it works = bad solenoid or circuit if not bad starter.

I did mine on the centre stand also - follow the DIY on how to "refresh" your starter - if you have it out anyway... it will make a world of difference.

My wife is the greatest - she won't let me sell my bike - I'm less grumpy when I ride...
