alternator wiring

Postby thorin1727 » Wed Apr 16, 2014 8:49 am

I ride an 82 Goldwing Aspencade..Been having charging probs. Found the connector going from alternator to harness badly burnt to the point that when I tried to disconnect connector,it literaly fell apart. Since all wires are yellow, does it make a difference which wire goes to which wire? I connected them the way I thought they were, not sure. Fired bike back up,was charging @ 14.8 volts, then after about 5 mins, dropped to battery voltage or less..I figure that I probably fried rec/reg..Need to be sure of wiring before I invest in new rec/reg..Any help would be appreciated :P

Yellow wires don't matter which to which..lots of tests to see if alternator is working or regulator is bad..although at idle charging at about 12v's is OK..rev to 3,000 rpm then it should be about 13.5v's

Several threads on testing this stuff if you can't find them I can post a full procedure
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,

as stated the yellow wires carry AC current so the order is not important, just make sure you have GOOD connections between the yellow wires, there is a lot of current and that will cause heat and that is a bad thing!! Make sure you really clean the wires before joining them together to get the best possible connection (Lowest resistance).

Thanks for the info...I cut the wires back, replaced with fresh wire..Soldered connections and wrapped wires with shrink tubing. So I guess next stop is getting a rec/reg.

I would make sure that you're actually charging now before assuming the regulator/rectifier is bad.
