83 GL1100A Aspencade electrical issue

Postby dfdmedic498 » Fri May 14, 2010 1:34 pm

I have an 83 1100 Aspencade and my running lights no longer work yet my turn signals and brake lights work. I have checked the fuse block and all of the fuses are intact. Any suggestions for me to check out? I need to get this fixed within the next few days as we are riding up and down the Eastern seaboard for our honeymoon.

Congratulations - my wife and I also toured around on our 1100 for our honeymoon. :)

If you turn the key to "P" (park), do the running lights come on? Do you have any other lights added to the bike that come on as running lights, other than the tail light?

No, those lights did not. However, I did discover that if the flash cannister plugged in all of the way, the running lights will not function. After tracking down a dead short that I had in my left rear turn signal, (The ground lead wasn't plugged in causing the turn signal to cease operation once you stepped on the brakes.) I turned my focus to the fuse block again.

After fiddling around with the fuses, I just on a hunch decided to check out the flash cannister and behold, once I pushed it back into place fully, the running lights came back on.

On the other note, we are riding from Southwest Michigan to Bangor, Maine and then down to Arlington National Cemetery then home. It should be a great honeymoon trip for the two of us...now I just have to get my hands on a Draught box for a keg of Guinness...after all, it's an Irish wedding/reception.

Congrats and have fun. May you both enjoy your trip through Maine. Any thing happening in Bangor that you're going to, or just passing through? I haven't yet heard of any meets or rides for this year. Also, watch for work zones on I 95 and I 295. Both are being worked on pretty extensively.

You only need two tools in life - wd-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the wd-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape!
