Led headlight for GL1100

Postby red dog » Thu May 01, 2014 9:39 am

Do they make an LED headlight that fits the GL1100? They were selling them at the Leesburg Bike Fest for $200 that included the front turn signals and they installed them. I thought I told them what bike I had and that I only wanted the headlight to go and they still wanted $100. I thought I could find it cheaper online...can't find it.

You might...but I doubt you will be happy with the results. LEDs have come a long way for lighting, but LEDs that put out the amount of light equivalent to a cheap halogen bulb are still very expensive. You can get replacement LED "bulbs" that fit in place of H3 or H4 halogen bulbs, but the light output is somewhat anemic, and not patterned the same as the halogen bulbs.

I have one on my 1981, 1100 Interstate. It's made by Trucklite, I got it from one of our vendors from work to try out. Works great. It's a complete sealed beam assy. pretty much the same as the Harley upgrade kit. The price point on the unit I have is around 300$. It draws almost no current and is supposed to last 10 yrs, still a bit too expensive. Like the man said, you can buy a lot of Standard halogen bulbs for what these units cost. It's a great upgrade if you have the money and don't care, it puts out a lot of nice white light, similar to the halogen silver stars I had in it before. I can get you the part number and you can contact your local heavy duty parts supplier or it may be available online. If it wasn't given to me I wouldn't pay that much money, you can get a HID kit for less than half the cost.

Did you ever concider HID lighting. I installed an HID system for motorcycles, with high low beam, that I puscahesed on Ebay. The difference is literally night and day. I got the 5500k, which is a very white light, and it really lights up the night. It also run on less wattage that the Halogens. The only modification I had to make was to put an off/on switch in line with the live feed from the ignition switch to the headlight. So now the head light has to be turned on and off with a separate switch. The reason for this was because the alternater on the 1100 dose not have enough watage output to run the ballast on the HID system at start up, so you have to put on the headlights after the bike is running (just like the old days, LOL). I wonder how many people on here can actually remember having to do that.

In the UK ( I don't know about anywhere else) although HID's are available as a retro fitment, they are illegal unless the headlamp and reflector has been designed for them. That doesn't stop folk fitting them and blinding other road users as a consequence. Also, there are NO LED headlights currently legal for use here.

There is no requirement (other than common sense) to run a headlight permanently on here in the UK. Which is why we have switches on our bikes. In fact, you don't even need to have a headlight at all, as long as you only run in the daylight.

'Impossible' is just a level of difficulty! The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask first!
