82 Brakes on an 81GL

Postby firstwing81GL1100 » Mon May 05, 2014 6:00 pm

Hello everyone. This may have been discussed before but does anyone know about swapping out the brakes on an 81 GL1100 interstate with the brakes from an 82 or later model? The 82 has the twin piston calipers all around and I have the 81 with the single piston calipers and that sounds like a much better set up since my brakes are not what I would like them to be. It's my understanding that in 83, Honda went with the balanced brakes and I doubt i could get all the parts necessary for that swap. I am watching a set of brakes on ebay from an 82 and with any luck, i can snag them and all my dreams would come true? I guess my question is has anyone ever done this swap and if so, is it recommended? I can imagine i would have to get the caliper mounts also as they look different than the single piston mounts i have now. I love this bike! My brother GAVE it to me when he upgraded to an 1800 and i have been riding it ever since 2010. It still has a lot of serviceable years left and it is fun to ride but it seems to be lacking in the whoa department. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

You could upgrade to the twin piston calipers of the 82 if you can find all the partsmor you could install a set of stainless braided brake lines. The old rubber hosesnon your bike now are swelling when you use the brakes instead of squeezing the pads. You can still upgrade the calipers but you should do the lines first. At the top of the for sale page you will see a post from Lopeha55 viewtopic.php?f=9&t=11422
Send Andy a PM asking for a price. I have a set of these on my 1100 and my1500, love them. 8-)

ok, thanks! I was planning on getting some new lines. I think my calipers could use a rebuild though as well. I was thinking i would get the 82 calipers and just rebuild them since i had to do it anyway. New lines, fresh pads and twin piston calipers with a rebuild and that should be about as good of a brake set up as i need! I'm just hoping that the 82 calipers and master cylinder will just bolt right on. Thanks for the link, I'll go check it out... :)
