Gas Cap Not Venting Re: 1981 GL1100 Interstate

Postby SteveM » Mon May 12, 2014 12:24 pm

So I went to change the petcock because it was leaking gas out of the front and when I disconnected the hose to drain it the fuel came out under enormous pressure. The bike is sitting in a shaded area so the ambient heat was enough to pressurize the tank. I previously had an issue with a leak around the sending unit but I tightened that up. I also have had leakage from the nipple on the left side of the carbs where a vacuum type hose goes. not sure what this is for yet but I'm guessing that the fuel tank pressure is also overwhelming the carb floats and flooding.

I have looked for an aftermarket on Ebay but don't see any available. Is there a way to fix this cap or does anyone know where to find an appropriate aftermarket cap?

Get a can or two of Seafoam, pour them into a (non-plastic!) receptacle of some kind, and soak your gas cap in it for a day or so. With any luck, it will dissolve the gummy fuel deposits clogging the vent in the gas cap and fix your problem.

I have no idea whether or not PB Blaster will dissolve gasoline deposits. It is a penetrating oil, not a solvent. Seafoam is a solvent specifically meant to dissolve gasoline deposits and gum.

I think I will go safe and stick with the Seafoam. Thanks for the input.
