reversed jumper cables

Postby oops » Sun May 18, 2014 12:16 pm

I just got a 1982 goldwing that has been sitting garaged for 1 year. Like a dumbass, I hooked the jumper from my non running truck backwards. Now I have no power at the switch or accessories. The big main fuse is not blown, but I have no idea of the cylindrical relay it is attached to. It is where the leads all plug in at the battery

That's the starter solenoid only activates when the starter button is pushed. All the power to the bike goes through two of the four wires there..I think..most replace the dog bone fuse with a blade type.
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,

Battery positive is connected to the starter solenoid...on the "B" connection.
There is a internal jumper from it to the dog bone fuse mounting screw..
It leaves the fuse mount and is jumper connected to both red wires...
One red wire connects directly to the regulator module..
The other connects to the ignition switch..
Use a test light and follow the volts starting at the solenoid red wires....

It is possible that reversing the battery leads may have damaged the regulator module...
It is fuse protected by the 30 amp dog bone fuse.
If it is shorted out,it can now blow the fuse even with the key off.
You could unplug the module first before you proceed to find the dead voltage path.
There is a simple resistance test for the module done with any type of ohm meter.

There is no relay.
Power goes from the "B" on the starter solenoid through the 30 amp fuse and then up both red wires.
One feeds the regulator.Look for 12 volts there.
The other red wire goes directly to the ignition switch. When in the "on" position it leaves on the black wire and feeds the fuses.

It's the start solenoid.
Battery connects to it.A link connects to one of the dog bone fuse screws. The other end goes up to the red wires.
