Signal solenoid chatters

Postby glk17l » Sun May 18, 2014 5:38 pm

Turn signal switch solenoid keeps clicking when the switch is turned on, sometimes when the ignition key is turned first turned on it clicks. It also chatters for a while after the signal switch is off. I took it apart to fix the right side that wouldn't stay on due to the worn plastic slider on the switch. Thats whe the problem started. I took it apart, twice thinking it was grounding out, but couldn't find anything. Some thing has to be energizing the solenoid. the switch under the sterring yoke seems to br OK.
Thanks, glk17l.

Most likley culprit is the turn signal cancler module.
You would have to verify all the input voltages are stable first.
My "bad" module had a swollen bulge on one side.

Also, the switch under the steering. Its not a switch. Its more like a volume control.
One side is volts, the other ground. As you move the lever, the middle connection varies smoothly between volts and ground.
If its erratic,it can be left unplugged. This would only disable the handle bar turn off feature.

And even more info...
If you unplug the module, your turn signals will still work...they just won't cancel....
On the 82 gl1100a model....
The canceler module just monitors the flasher and activates the "disconnect" solenoid....Other models use a different method (no solenoid) to disconnect the flasher circuit.
So ....if the module is bad and you get another one...be certain that it's the right part number and not listed as a "fits all" type....

Only if there's a bumble bee in there.
The "buzz" is actually the turn signal release solenoid erraticly being pulsed.
Not uncommon.Same thing on my 83.

Thanks for the information every one.
virgilmobile: So the the unit under the steering in not a switch, but a potentiometer. I think I will just disconect it. I am "old school" and I am used to manualy turning off the signal on a bike, since 1969.

Correct.the angle sensor is a potentiometer.
However disconnecting may not stop the solenoid chatter. You may have to unplug the canceler module.
If I remember right,it's under the shelter on the left side.

Thanks, Virg.
I did unlpug the angle sensor, and it did not resolve the problem. I will unplug the cancel modual. I am pretty sure that there is a pinched wire in the swtich housing on the handle bar. There is really no room in the switch solenoid housing to splice a wire, unless I relace the entire wire from end to end.
I will let you know the results.
thanks.

Took out the signal canceling module, and it works fin. I just turn off the switch after the turn. the buzzing and clicking of the solinod has stoped.
Thank, you.
