bearing retainer threads.

Postby futhashi » Fri May 30, 2014 3:02 pm

My ride is an 82 GL1100 Interstate. I recently decided to change the bearings on the rear and will do so on the front as well. I am doing this because I just bought the bike and am restoring it for a very long trip I am taking. I drilled out the stakes carefully and tried to ease out the retainer, in and out a little at a time with wd 40 and a hand wrench. Eventually had to do the in and out with an impact wrench and when it eventually came out the threads were quite damaged from corrosion and especially the wheel threads.

I can get used wheels at the cycle salvage yard but they won't guarantee their threads so I could be spending money on more bad rims. I do realise this is a safety issue but apart from buying new rims, does anybody have any suggestions on still using these rims with new retaining rings?? I still have to do the front wheel and for sure that one squeaks.

Also, do the wheels from a 1500 fit an 1100? For that matter, are there Goldwing, models and years, wheels that I can or cannot use on mine? I am in Canada so shipping from the US is probably not that feasible.

Appreciate your comments.

82 wheels were one off for the year so nothing else fits w/o mods..

As to a 'fix" buy a tap (or a hardened steel bolt that is the right size) and try to rethread it's an expensive tool maybe you can rent one or pay a shop to try it. Depends how bad the threads are chewed up????

Backyard mechanic "fix" there is always JB weld but once in that's it for that rim it is a permanent "fix".
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,

Hey Thanks RBG.

I was hoping that someone would respond with that backyard fix. I thought of it but wasn't sure. I am headed down your way and beyond, and so if I do this, Im gonna start lookin on these sites for a rim for sale down there(western states) , by then it will time to change the tires. Same work to change a tire as a rim

Thanks again

Just to confirm your reponse stands true that any 82: Standard, Interstate or Aspencade would, or would not be interchangeable?

In looking down there for parts, noticed you were selling a bunch of stuff. Have any rims for an 82 GL1100 Interstate?
