Help! No power!!!!

Postby argosybob » Wed Jun 11, 2014 11:39 am

I'm starting to think I'm a jinx. My 83 GL1100i was running pretty well, but now she's not developing any power. Strange thing - I adjusted the idle speed with the bike on the center stand, but when I took the bike off the center and put it on the side stand, the engine dies. WTF? If you've ever ridden off forgetting to turn on the gas, you know the sound the engine makes just before it dies and you reach down and turn on the gas. That's pretty much the sound the bike makes now under load in 1st gear. Any ideas?

You probably answered your own question...It doesn't have enough gas in the carbs to get it going...
Any fuel delivery problem....
No fuel from the tank feeding the filter, plugged filter, dead fuel pump,etc...
First test fuel flow to the carbs...by the book...

Yup, and what little fuel is in the carb float bowls is no longer being picked up and sprayed into the carbs when the bike goes on the side stand, as the fuel sloshes to one side of the bowls.

I was thinking of the fuel filter, but I have less than 300 miles on this one... Could the tank have been THAT dirty?

Power problem solved!

I had a bad tank of gas. Filled up at a local station where I've bought gas many times with no issues, but this tankful must have had a lot of water or something in it. My son filled at the same station and had the same problem. I used my el-cheapo Harbor Freight Transfer Hand Pump to get the fuel out of the bike and into my Suburban (that pig will burn ANYTHING), refilled with 93 Octane and Bingo! All is well with the world. That was my first "bad gas" experience with the bike, I guess that's what threw me for a loop...

Oh yes... I replaced the fuel filter too, the water in the gas did a number on the paper element.

That will definitely do it! Just out of interest, which gas station delivered the bad gas to you?

I got the bad gas at the Gulf station located right off Exit 1 of I-93 in Salem, NH.
