front brake caliper retainer

Postby dummysales » Wed Jun 18, 2014 8:20 pm

Greetings,
I replaced a front tire on my 83 Aspencade 1100 today and in the process took the left side caliper off in order to fit the rim through the caliper space between the forks. Then a little problem occurred. On the official microfiche drawing from Honda the part is number 12, retainer, FR. The drawing gives no detail on where this part goes and it dropped out onto the ground. Anyone have any good description of how to insert it in the appropriate place? the exploded view shows only that it goes somewhere near the inside bracket near the pads. I'll try posting a photo of the errant item.

okay, you get a link instead. Thanks for any comments that you may make in assisting me in getting this part back into the brake system.

BTW, I looked at the right sided caliper and I've either lost this part previously and didn't realize it or it's buried and dirty enough that I'd have to take the caliper apart to view it. Didn't want to go that far in the off chance that I'd also drop that one out without knowing where and how it goes back in.

That is an anti rattle shim and there should be one on each end of the caliper where the pad ends would touch caliper. That one there may be the upper or lower, the side with the two nubs faces the caliper and with proper tension is held in place. Smooth side would go towards pad ends.
This is what I do

Those shims actually fit onto the caliper bracket, not the caliper. You can see one on the bracket in this picture:

Note that this is a picture of the REAR caliper bracket on my 1982 GL1100, so it's not going to be exactly the same, but it's the same idea. There are two on each bracket, one on the bottom and one on the top.

Okay, I'll look to see if I can find the spot on the front bracket. Thanks for the timely replies.

Now hear this. Mission accomplished. Many thanks, again. Carry on.
