GL1100 SMOKING AND MISFIRE

Postby darklancer » Mon Jun 23, 2014 9:47 am

For all you clued up guys out there, consider this!

My trike is based on a Goldwing GL1100.

She was running fine last year but I took her off the road for the winter and she was moved down to BB Customs to fit a new rear diff a month ago, when she was moved she wasnt running (I dont know why)

The new diff is in but she is displaying a BIG problem.

She is smoking badly out of two cylinders.

She is miss firing on tickover and on mid range revs

Spark on the 2 rear pots is weak.

Shes running like a DOG!

They have checked the compression which is fine.

They have change the coil for the rear cylinders which made NO difference

Now I know the valve stems needed to be done although it wasnt viewed as bad enough last year and she has had a low level of miles put on her since and I wouldnt have thought this would cause the misfire problem, but I could be wrong!

Bear in mind she was in for a diff change which is of course near the pulse generators?

Bear in mind also that I badly abandoned her last year, I have no excuse except for loads of personal stuff which meant she ended up sitting in a garage for 9 months, yes she was dry but I didnt even drain the old fuel out!

It has been suggested to change the plugs, drainv fuel and clean the carbs, and check the pulse generators, any other ideas please?

Thanx

Mike (darklancer)

Obviously fuel/carbs is going to be suspect, but if you KNOW already that spark is weak on two cylinders, then trace down the source of that issue. Are the same cylinders with weak spark the ones that are smoking?

I believe the 2 pots with weak sparks are the one smoking yes.

Would the weak sparks have a bearing on the smoking?

Thanx

It's possible - unburnt gas getting through to the exhaust can cause smoke. Does the smoke smell oily? Sweet?

I'm assuming the plugs are in decent shape, not coated in oil, anything like that, and you're still getting weak spark?

As for your spark issue, sir, this is what I did to my old 1980. Just replacing the stock coils with the Accels. Damn, it ran SOOOO much better after the installation.
