alternator output

Postby t_reister » Thu Jul 03, 2014 11:57 am

My 1981 wing shows great charging (above 14 volts) when the weather is cool. During the summer months, operating temps rise and alternator output drops. Is this the nature of the beast??? The engine is within operating temperature, just a little warmer in the summer. I live in El Paso and summer is in the 100 degree range. HOT...

My generator output dives below 12 volts in the heat, according to my bikes gauge.

Temperature can have a effect on the voltages you see.
Especially if your watching the original voltmeter on the dash.
Obviously the most accurate reading is directly across the battery posts with a digital meter.
Keep a watch on the battery fluid level, they do tend to drop a bit.Keep it topped off.
My 83 analog meter would show 12 volts exactly and my digital one on the battery showed 13.6
I replaced the analog one with a relay switched digital one just because I could.
Clean the battery posts, tend to any problems with the 3 yellow wires and corrosion.Replace the original dog bone fuse and ride safe.
The temp...normal operating temp for the stator is engine temp( its inside it ) normal temp for the regulator module can be above 165* within 10 minutes of running.
I'm not a lead acid battery expert but its voltage at the posts may vary with temperature also.
Still within specs tho.
