82 Aspencade I have am but no fm radio

Postby dsteinour » Sat Jul 05, 2014 3:42 pm

Ok my first Honda and my first post...Need Information...I got an 82 Aspencade this summer and I enjoy the ride...I replaced the Type I radio with a Type II and everything from an 83 that I picked up as a parts bike from Craigslist. And I mean everything. Tuner, Amp, Dash Gauges, CB, Intercom. the whole nine yards. Everything works except I have no FM reception. I tried a different Type II from a friends bike that we knew the FM worked and still nothing...I'm thinking maybe the tuner...Any thoughts.

Welcome to the forum.

Probably the tuner. The part under the right faring cover.
Seirra electronics still work on these relics.
You can call them on their 800 number and ask them what might be relevant. Especially since you know what is in the fairing and where.
They will be your best bet for some SOUND advice. They probably will not be there 7/7/14 as they are at Wing Ding this weekend.

Make sure your antenne is connected to the wire at the antenne, the connection up by the regulator,a good connection at the splitter (left fairing cover) and the connection to the tuner.

Do you have AM reception?

Double check the antenna connection into the tuner (which is located under the right fairing pocket). The antenna wire wraps around to the left side, and there are a couple inline connections along the way, including the splitter (if you have a CB). Make sure they're all connected and clean.

The FM tuner drifting and no longer receiving any stations is a well-known problem on the Type II system - it's due to old electrolytic capacitors. Capacitors have a limited age, which is accelerated by exposure to heat, and these radios are getting quite old.

If you still get no reception after checking all antenna connections, send the tuner off to Sierra. They will fix it for a flat $100, and send it back to you as good as new. Better than taking a chance on an eBay tuner that may or may not work, and might end up with the same exact problem in a year or two.

i'm gonna take my old one apart and see if there might be an easy cheap fix, or if it can be looked at/done locally,
prob not worth it for me to send it out for repair, shipping and back typically ain't no chump change from canada

i ended up getting an am/fm mp3 input with built in amp mini unit including speakers for ~ 30 bux that i can mount quick either in the left glovebox or handlebars to thumb it, took ~ 5 minutes to setup and works pretty good for the money

bit off topic but related and just a quick question for this thread, as i understand, the fm is known to fail and the real fix is is sending it out to the manufacturer for proper repair, so getting one from ebay is not the best way to go

same deal with the original factory intercom & cb stuff?

The manufacturer won't touch them, and neither will Honda. To the best of my knowledge, the only place left in the world that will repair them is Sierra Electronics, http://www.sierra-mc.com

The intercom seems fairly robust, with few reported problems. The radio tuner is most problematic, with the CB coming in second. The problem with them both is electrolytic capacitors. Electrolytic capacitors have a limited age, and exposure to heat speeds up the aging process. Both the radio and the CB are packed solid with electrolytics, and both are stuck in a fairing where they are subjected to fairly extreme heat. It's a miracle really that they last as long as they do, which is a testament to the quality of the original design and components used.
