valve noise 1981 interstate

Postby harpmaniac » Tue Jul 08, 2014 2:55 pm

I'm having trouble getting valve clatter out of the 1-3 side, it's driving me nuts, 32,000 miles, I put in a new set of gates belts, the bike runs great, all the springs look good, I'm adjusting properly on T-1 taking great care on the compression and exhaust stroke, I read somewhere to gap intake and exhaust at 0.10mm, i followed the manual and have exhaust set at 0.13mm, it is much quieter than it was. Do I just live with it or am I missing something?

My 83 had louder ticking noise from the right side....more than the left....
many adjustments, replacing the cam and rockers didn't help....
Finally dawned on me...the stupid chrome pump cover is bolted right there on the intake studs..silly thing acted like a bell...
You can also switch to rotella or Delco diesel oil.
Also the valve are set with the engine stone cold...And that is in millimeters ...
intake 0.1mm...exh 0.13mm

Thanks for the reply, I am running Rotella, it's quieter after adjustment, maybe I'm being too anal about it, i also have a 77 naked wing that is quiet as can be.
