The wires of the stock volt meter connect to the wires that are bundled to the wires leading to the headlamp. There should be 3 wires (green, black, brown) green = ground, black = power lead for gauge, brown = power lead for light. My '82 Aspy has 4 wires coming off the bundle near the headlamp, but only 3 are for the volt meter.

thank you for the information. I found the wires you were mentioning, and the volt meter works now. I just want to ask, is it normal for the volt meter to move up the scale very slowly when the power is applied to it? It does settle around the 12 volt mark. If I take the power away, it goes to zero, and applied again, moves very slowly to around 12 volts again. thank you again for info.
Mine moved very slowly from 0 to 12 and quickly back to zero just as you are experiencing. When the key was in ACC it seemed to move even more slowly. I have since replaced it with a digital aftermarket volt meter/clock/thermometer.
