83 Aspy Pulls to the right

Post by florida_ump » Fri Aug 01, 2014 12:19 am

Hello all. New question. Replaced my front tire. Removed and reinstalled myself, had a shop install the tire and balance. OK, going down the highway, I haave to keep constant forward pressure on the left handle grip and if I let go of the bars, the wheel will veer right, the bike will lean left, and I will turn. I know I must have not aligned things correctly. How do I check alignment. Also, there are dials at the bottom of both fork legs. What are those for? Thanks in advance. This forum always gives the best advice and pointers. God Bless.

One check is to hold something in place next to the rim as you turn it..the distance between it and the rim should remain the same same for the tire..I put a Allen wrench in vise grips and lay them on the ground ans move close to the tire w/o touching.

It could be the tire was mounted off a bit..bead not even or the forks/axle was mounted cocked.

After you check what was said above and you still have the same trouble. Check to see if your right side fork tube has slipped in the steering head clamp. Over time it may have slipped upwards and this would cause a pull to the right. The new tire may have just made it more obvious by the way it rides.

I echo emt613 - check to make sure both tubes are the same length and haven't slip. Check that the rim isn't cocked in its mounts or the rim isn't loose.

And the dials are for your "anti-dive" setting on the forks.
My wife is the greatest - she won't let me sell my bike - I'm less grumpy when I ride...

How did you reinstall the wheel - what did you do in terms of the pinch bolts on the forks that hold the axle in place? What order did you do things - pinch bolts, axle nut?
