How to find the engine oil level on a GL1100

Postby bsag14 » Thu Aug 07, 2014 3:45 pm

Personally, I am unable to determine the engine oil level of my GL1100 from the small window in the sump. It could be empty, full or overfilled, but it is impossible to be sure from looking at the glass. Is there any other method of determining the engine oil level?

Other than draining the crankcase and filling with the prescribed amount of oil, I can't think of any way to determine the oil level is correct... other than (of course) placing the motorcycle on the center stand, cleaning the sight glass on the side of the engine and checking the level that way.

Is your sight glass clean (especially on the outside)? One "trick" I've used on the 1100 is to use a strong beamed flashlight to look at the level. It can be hard to tell, especially if the level is too full, as it makes the entire sight glass appear the same color. You can also start the engine while the bike is on the center stand and view the oil "moving" through the glass. If the level is really low, there will be little to no evidence of oil even while the engine is running.
I am wrong as often as I am right concerning what is wrong with someone else' motorcycle without having seen the machine in person. Guessing with limited information, as to the source of the trouble, is sketchy at best.

Hey I ride a 1100 .. when looking at the sight glass you will see a plain screw in the middle of the glass that screw is a wiper that wipes the inside of the sight glass. Using a plain screwdriver rotate the screw turning the wiper on the inside and clean the glass.

There are also dipsticks available for the 1100 that mount to the oil drain opening.

I had the same problem, there used to be a source for the kit- but it is on "hold" for awhile.
Check it at night, on a level area, with a flashlight.
If you still cant see it, it maybe overfilled. Drain it and measure how much came out including the oil filter. Three and 1/2 quarts is the amount.
It is easy to see at night with clean oil.

Here is a simple homemade dipstick.
Best of luck. Regards, Johnny

This is true. It is hard to see.
While on the center stand clean the outside of the sight glass well.
Then get a small jewelers type flat screwdriver and spin the internal wiper around.
If you still can't see a oil level line, it is either over filled above the sight glass or very low and beneath it.

somehow the link got messed up in the "translation", but glad you were able to get to it. when you install it, fill your bike's engine with the proper amount of oil, pull the stick out of it's tube and make a "scribe" mark on the stick because the oil is going to be hard to see and read on the stick. i used a file to make a mark on my stick so i could tell where the "full" line was and didn't over fill my engine with oil.

lol. that's ok, no problem.....littlegoldy, heres a photo of how i have my oil dip stick mounted. like i said, its really easy to mount. you might have to bend the tube just a little to pull it away from the oil filter cover. go to Lowe's and get one of those metal clips thats used to hold coaxle cable to the side of a building and mount it to one of the radiator grill studs like i have mine. remember to fill your oil to the proper level, take the stick out and mark it with a file or something that's permanent so you'll know where the "full" mark should be.

for some reason i cant get the photo i want to load onto this post, but i'll try again later.

stuart.
