GL1100 starter upgrade - 4 brush??

Postby SneakyPete1100 » Sat Aug 09, 2014 6:25 pm

Any WingNuts out there know if it is possible to convert the 2-brush end plate to 4-brush on a GL1100 starter motor? Is it simply a matter of fabricating an extra set of brush holders or will the field windings be out of sync??
My Wing always suffered from poor cranking, I rebuilt the starter several times and have a few spare motors in the shed.
What do the experts say?

I doubt its a starter issue, since you have rebuilt it already. Did you clean the commutator well?
Have you checked to see how the system is charging?
Check voltage at starter as its being cranked, (ignition off ) you should be pulling around 10v or so.
If your at 9 or less some thing else is going on- battery may be shot, stator going bad, loose connections . etc , etc .
Get a multimeter and learn how to use one ( if you don't already ) VERY handy in this type of situation.
