'82 GL1100A missing/backfiring during warmup

Postby jmaldo » Mon May 31, 2010 5:00 pm

Hello everyone!
My Goldwing is misfiring when I first start it up. I pull the choke out to start it in the morning and it misfires and backfires too. Plugs are new, recently had carbs rebuilt and synchronized. Any help is appreciated.

How new/strong is your battery? Low voltage can cause weak spark, which can cause misfiring. Immediately after starting, your battery will be lower than normal, because of the heavy load imparted on it by starting.

Battery is about 6 months old. Hopefully fixing the connector problem will fix this as well.

Make sure your choke is going all the on. When I first bought my 83 it was winter and when I would start it cold, it would only run on one or two cylinders. Once it warmed up (about 10 minutes) it would run on all four. Then I noticed when I let go of the choke lever it was moving back by itself. Now I hold the lever until it starts on fast idle.

I did have some carb work done and the choke was definately out of tolerance. I have to pull the lever all the way out, the bike starts up and runs slow then gradually increases RPMs. I'm hoping the the dude that rebuilt the carbs for me didn't mess up the choke system. I'm looking at that possibility as well.
Thanks!
