81 Interstate voltage

Postby Pappy Wilson » Mon May 31, 2010 8:23 pm

I have an 81 Interstate and am concerned about the voltage. It usually rides a little below 12 volts until about 3000 rpm and then goes slightly above. I have checked the voltage across the battery and it is indeed about 12 volts until the 3 grand mark and then it goes to about 13.5 volts. It always starts and has never let me down but I am concerned. Any advice would be appreciated
Thanks,

That sounds about right. Below 2500-3000 RPM, you're actually draining the battery to keep the bike running - the stator doesn't generate enough power to run the bike and charge the battery at idle/low RPM.
