1981 GL1100 rattle

Postby plumbed1 » Sun Aug 17, 2014 1:26 pm

Hello everyone, thanks for being here. My Goldwing has 43,000 original miles on it and has been very well cared for. I do not put more than 1000 miles a year on her so I was shocked when I fired her up a few weeks ago to the sound of a lot of chatter. I believe the camshaft chain is loose. Is there a way for me to tighten it or do I need to get into the motor?

The chain I'm referring to is the one that the starter is connected to. I thought it was a camshaft chain but it obviously isn't. I still need some advice as to how I should repair this noise(slapping rattle). The bike runs well, took it for a spin this morning but the gear/rattle noise is behind the valve covers right where the starter is located.

When were the valves adjusted last? It could also be your carbs are out of synch.
I am wrong as often as I am right concerning what is wrong with someone else' motorcycle without having seen the machine in person. Guessing with limited information, as to the source of the trouble, is sketchy at best.

Sounds to me like the carbs are gunked up from sitting so much. The "primary" chain is rattling from the cylinders not firing evenly. I would try riding the bike with a full dose of SeaFoam in the tank. Just might free up the gunk. Then ride more often or if not riding run the carbs dry when parked for long periods.

Thanks to all for your assistance. I adjusted the valves during my last oil change which was less than 100 miles ago. Based on what you have advised I ordered a carb sync tool as I relied on a local bike shop to sync them but that was 5,000 miles ago. I never was comfortable with the job they did and that is why I will do the work myself from now on.I will post the results as I receive the tool and make the adjustments.

OK my friends, as promised, here is my update regarding my GL 1100. I mixed 8 ounces of Seafoam with 5 gallons fresh 91 Octane Chevron(only fuel I use). While burning that fuel I awaited the arrival of my carb sync tools. I rechecked the valve adjustments(cold) and proceeded with the carb syncing. SUCCESS!!! Bike is running better than ever. Will report later on actual gas mileage. Thanks for the advice.
