Avon tires

Postby marve319 » Tue Aug 19, 2014 7:04 pm

I have been trying to find Avon Tires for my 83 Goldwing Interstate 1100. I can't find a matching pair. I found for the front tire a Avon AM41 Venom the correct size but they didn't have a matching one. Then I found for the rear tire an Avon Am21 Roadrunner MT90H-16. I wanted to have a matching set, but have not been able to find them. Question is a MT90H-16 the same as 140/90/16??
I currently have Shinko's on from when I purchased it. I do not like them. I just found that the rear tire is out of round. (maybe this is causing my slight wobble in the front if I take a hand off the handlebars at about 20-30 miles an hour). I researched that problem and trying to work my way down the list of things that would cause that wobble. I am starting with the tires because I know the rear is not right. Anyway let me get back on the subject. Does anyone know if I can get a matching set of Avon tires, front and rear??? Wingadmin, I see you stated in earlier discussions that you are using Avon tires. Can you help me out??

I had them on my 82, but I know the 83 has different sizes...

That said, I have purchased a lot of my tires from http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/ - they have great prices and excellent stock.

Sorry it took so long to get back. Been real busy at work. Thanks for the information. I will try that and see what they have. I just wanted to get a set, instead of two different tires.

Well I went to the site you gave me and its still the same problem. Avon does not have a rear tire my size (140/90/16) They do carry an Avon for the front tire (120/90/18) Avon AM41 Venom. What is your suggestion if I can't find a matching pair from Avon. Should I go to another brand or mix match them??

Ok Wingadmin, I saw an earlier post where you listed the size of Avon tires you purchased. They still carry the AM41 Venom, however; they no longer carry the AM42 in that size (140/90HB-16(77H). What would you suggest could replace that? Like I stated before I cannot find a matching pair under Avon in my two sizes. I reckon I will have to go to another Brand, any suggestions.

My wife's PC800 has sizes that Avon also does not have matching tires for. I ended up with two different tires (both Avon, but not matching), and it rides quite nicely.

It looks like Dunlop 404 are matching tires. Any experience with them?? Or does anyone know about Dunlop? You know the book states Dunlop or Bridgestone, but then again the book is 30 years old. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a Dunlop Elite 3 on the rear of my 1200, and it has given me the best tread life I've ever had. I never ran a 404. A good friend of mine has a Harley "Road King" which is a pretty heavy bike, and he is running a Dunlop Elite 3 on the rear and a Dunlop 402 (I believe it is) on the front. He has told me he gets good traction and wear out of them both.

Sorry I didn't answer the question you asked.

For a time, I had my mind all made up I was going to run some Bridgestone S11 "Spitfire" tires on my 1200, because the load rating and tread design appealed to me. Then I read some not-so-favorable comments on them. I haven't decided NOT to buy them, and I may buy them when the time comes to get more tires. I just didn't run out and get them as I had planned. They MAY have them in a size that fits your wheels.

I think the trouble with buying motorcycle tires on the recommendation of others is that no two of us ride the same roads in the same way. So, the only real way to know if you like a tire or not, is to try them for yourself. I can honestly say that the Dunlop I have experience with has been the best rear tire (wear wise) I've ever run. Your experience may vary.
I am wrong as often as I am right concerning what is wrong with someone else' motorcycle without having seen the machine in person. Guessing with limited information, as to the source of the trouble, is sketchy at best.

Thanks everyone for trying to help me with the tire problem. I did find out that both the front and rear tire that I currently have on the 1100 are Shenko's and they both are out of round (flat spots) there is about a 1/4 inch on the rear and about an 1/8 on the front. No wonder I bounce around the turns at 55+ mph. I checked the front bearings and head bearing and they feel tight.

Now I have to figure out what tires to run on it. I guess by what your telling me, it won't hurt to run two different tire treads. I will figure something out and keep you posted. Again thanks for your help.

Ok gentlemen, I have decided to go back to the Shinko tire. The 230 Tour Master. It is the same tire already on the 1100i. I found a flat spot on each of the tires I have now. They were on the 1100i from the PO and I think that is the reason they are out of round.

Okay next question. Dyna Beads, 2oz in both front and rear tires?? It says 130-240mm for 2ozs. So is it okay to put two ozs in the front tire also which is a 120??

2 oz in both is correct. You can't put too much in the way of beads; too little can cause unbalances, but too much won't cause a problem.

Thanks again WingAdmin. You are always there when we need you. It is appreciated. Once I get the tires on I will check back and let you know how it worked out.

I currently have a Shinko tourmaster 230 on the front of my 1200 and it seems to be running fine.
