Another leak

Postby zvacman » Tue Jun 01, 2010 7:15 am

I started the teardown of my bike yesterday and found a pool of oil (see photo). I know overfilling could cause this, can someone offer other scenarios I should check before reassembly.

Thanks, Z

I don't see a pool of oil...are you talking about the darkish area next to the vent cap? If so, then it's more than likely that's caused by overfilling, unless your bike has spent any amount of time on its side recently.

I see you've pulled the rear shock off, so I'm going to assume you know the rear axle castle nut cotter pin is missing, right?

Yes I was talking about the pool next to the vent, and as far as I know it hasn't been on it's side lately. The cotter pin is out for rear tire removal. It didn't have the style pin you show in the DIY section, did you switch to that style? Mine had the kind that you push through and bend the ends over. By the way, has anyone ever changed the oil on one of these WITHOUT losing the washer in the filter housing? Mine is missing!

Mine was gone to, but it was running OK so I put it back together without one. Next oil change I will correct it.

I don't know if the pin on mine is original or not - who knows what PO's have done to our bikes. :) I'll have a look in my service manual when I get home tonight, I'm pretty sure it's shown in there.

I lost the washer on my oil filter and ran without it for a couple of years. I just replaced it a couple of months ago. No adverse effects that I could tell.

Looking at the picture in the service manual, it has the type of cotter pin you describe. I was never thrilled with the one on my bike. It's solid, but it does feel like it could be whacked out of there too easily. I'll likely change it the next time I have it off.

I bought a replacement like the original last night in stainless steel. Back to the oil filter washer, where are you going to get one?
Now off topic, I found Moly 50 grease will that be suitable for the gears? I work 6 days per week and the closest Honda dealer is an hour away.

I found a washer at PartsnMore.com for a dollar. I bought several. :)

Honda specifies Moly 60 for the rear splines...will Moly 50 be good enough? I don't know. I suspect it might, but I can't say for sure, and the results of it not being good enough are rather destructive and expensive.

I just ordered Honda Moly 60, (2) tubes for $16.00 shipped to my door. I just didn't want to take any chances. The stuff I found at Car Quest was 50% but 10% short can make a difference.
