Head leak just above the oiler

Postby charlene0819 » Sat Aug 30, 2014 12:29 pm

1982 GL 1100. Had a blown head gasket right side. We rebuilt the head both sides due to mileage. Put it all back together and getting a oil leak top middle of the head both sides between the head and engine block. Took them off again and rechecked the oiler gaskets and reinstalled everything. Still leaking from the exact same spot on top of the heads both sides. Did check for head warp and both heads are good and straight. All new gaskets and no old gasket material left on. HELP

if it helps you are not the first person to have this problem. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=11331 the oil restrictor must be installed with 2 o-rings, a small one that just fits around the restrictor body and a larger one that nests in the head gasket hole. unfortunately the heads must be removed to correct this problem.

If it's a Saber Cycle gasket, you can pretty much expect it to leak, and fail in short order. 70 ft lb is far too much - almost double the 40 ft lb it is supposed to have. Leaving it torqued like this you can expect a cracked and/or warped head in the future after a few heat cycles.

It's going to leak or fail with the Saber Cycle gasket in there anyway, I would suggest getting a quality gasket and just doing it over again.

I used the Athena top end kit from them on my 1100. Around $100. 5000 miles later and no problems.
Cam seals are not included, but the valve seals are. And of course it has head gaskets.
The kit is guaranteed to be as good, if not better than oem. Regards, Johnyy

Replaced the crappy Sabre Part's gasket with Athena and she is running like a champ. Our only issue with the Athena is the valve cover gasket actually seems a bit to big, we cannot get it to fit. Any suggestions?

We now have 200 miles on the rebuild and it is such a nice ride! Did find the rear shocks we think are toast. Hit a bump and you can feel metal to metal like the shocks are 100% bottomed out.
