Postby blackbeauty » Sun Aug 31, 2014 12:29 pm

Hey folks I am having a fit with my 1980 Goldwing gauges, I took them out of the original cluster and installed in my fairing, the issue is going down the road the temp gauge don't work and fuel gauge is inaccurate. when I come to a stop both go to normal. Any ideas.

Thanks

I am very new to the GL world. But I have read that the 7volt regulator often fails causing those gauges to go out of wacky.

Hello,

I´ve had a similiar problem on my 1100 GL, and the problem was a faulty connection on the pluswire on the battery. When I fixed that everything worked OK. I should think your problem is coming from the electrical system, charging or the regulator and is not a fault in the gauges themselves.

My guess would be the 7 volt regulator, but you might want to do some tests to be sure. If you rev the engine in idle, does the same thing happen, or is it only when riding down the road?

My guess is a faulty ground, and the gauges are picking up enough ground through the brake light circuits to work momentarily. Did you mount to plastic...forget a ground wire..? Were they working before the modification?

A lot of times faulty grounds can manifest themselves this way, but I suspect not in this case. That said, stranger things have happened - if the 7 volt regulator had an iffy ground, it's possible. An easy way to tell would be to identify if the problem occurs only when the brake lights are off.

it is good sitting still you can rev au and good but going down the road is when it Is giving the issue.
