Before you buy, try taking it off and clean it . They get dirty internally from the brushes, a good cleaning, blowing it out can often repair it. Check the brushes also, they can were down and lose pressure on the commutator. If you don't do your own work then check out an auto electric shop that repairs electrics.
You can also buy on EBAY but the cheap ones under $90 are usually made in China and and I personally have had bad luck with these. I have bought from this place with good results. http://www.stockers.com/index.php?dt=HS-36N . Also check Ricks motorsports : http://ricksmotorsportelectrics.com/results.php Doug

I thought about getting into the starter rebuild "business" a while back. There's really not all that much to them. You can get a rebuild kit for 30$ or so, if memory serves me correctly, and have the entire starter removed, cleaned rebuilt and installed in an afternoon. I've heard good things about "Rick's"....
I am wrong as often as I am right concerning what is wrong with someone else' motorcycle without having seen the machine in person. Guessing with limited information, as to the source of the trouble, is sketchy at best.

Don't spin the stud when removing the starter..two wrench one to loosen the nut one to hold the stud in place..I have a special wrench I ground down to fit... if you do your starter is toast..broken contact

I bought one from emsglobaldirect on e-B... this summer. The first one broke a gear in the planetary. Sent them a note and they sent another out with prepaid return shipping for the defective unit. Great customer service and the second one worked fine.
