83 1100 GL carb leaking

Postby velvetrider » Fri Sep 05, 2014 7:43 am

I have read about "plenum" leaking on the forum but can not find the link now. I suspect that after 2 years of dealing with filled # 4 cyl. That this is my problem. BMW owner says, "just take it into dealer",
Yea right, Most dealer mechanics weren't even born when my bike was made,,,
Others say, "just rebuild the carbs",,,,The thing is Blackvelvet runs like a scalded dog, when the plug is not becoming fouled. Now,, What is the FIX ?
Thanks to all who share on the forum... :D

Its basic.one or more carbs have a fuel float valve that isn't working well.
Your just gonna have to service the carbs. At least get the floats to seal off the fuel.
You'll know when you get it apart what's needed.some just need the crud cleaned off the needle valve,others.. The rubber tip has hardened and won't seal...those should be replaced.
I usually clean the needle valve seat with Brasso on the end of a "Q" tip.
If they don't look perfect, replace them too.
Don't forget to clean the float pivot pin so the float pivots smooth .
Because it runs so darn well,I wouldn't mess with the slides or jets.
Unless you just wanna do them too.
Oh and "plenum leaking" only means that a carb is flooded and spilling into the plenum from the main jet hole.if the bike is on the side stand,it usually ends up in one of the left cylinders, hydrolocking the engine.

BMW owners are very well acquainted with the service departments at their dealers, because the bikes are very user-maintenance unfriendly. :)

Thanks Virgilmobile.
I understand, I have to take um out and go through each one,, I was simply hoping to avoid the ordeal.
I think I will continue to turn off gas each stop and carry spare plugs; Until cold weather comes. lol.

carb rebuild how to

http://www.ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12168

you can see what's leaking while carbs on the bike, pull the air box and look inside..full tank petcock on a piece of paper in the plenum cut to fit will show you the source most likely #4 carb out of the jet = bad float seat/needle, next float settings, next carb to plenum o ring

Best carb rebuild kit to buy is randakk's includes all the rubber stuff you'll need except float needles buy only OEm float needles.
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,
