1983 gl1100 rear brake caliper piston seals

Postby wingwrench » Tue Sep 09, 2014 9:41 pm

Today I took my 1983 gl1100 sticky rear brake caliper apart. Cleaned it all up perfect. Ordered new piston seals and dust covers. What I noticed after cleaning was that the piston seals that where in there were two different sizes..? Two different size seals in the same rear caliper.. One of the two fits snuggly over the piston and the other is quite loose over the piston.. The loose one has a larger od as well as a larger Id . The po must have changed only one seal..with the wrong seal..? Or maybe he mixed up the front and rear seals..? Or maybe the caliper was replaced with a caliper from a different year bike at some point.. Idk.?.. Does anyone know the exact od and id of the correct seal..? Are there different caliper/pistons for the1983 rear brake...? I ordered new seals from partszilla tomorrow will be 3days and they have not ship out yet.. I'm getting a sneaking suspition a week later I will receive the wrong parts.. Can anyone clear this up for me...? Thanks in adavance for any info... This site is great and has helped me out more than once.. Thank you...

Left side front and rear are 32mm. Right side 25.4 mm. Dual braking with foot pedal .Right front, is independent. This is from partszilla parts page. There are small differences in the 83 only so ordering parts for brakes are different. Also if you order front wheel bearing seals, two different sizes for left and right sides. Be careful when ordering parts for "fits all" in the 1100s. As for why on the dust seals, etc.. speculations only. Let us know how your doing.

I didn't know they went with linked brakes on any of the GL1100's. I knew (or at least I thought I knew) the GL1200's all had linked brakes.
I am wrong as often as I am right concerning what is wrong with someone else' motorcycle without having seen the machine in person. Guessing with limited information, as to the source of the trouble, is sketchy at best.

The new seals came in the other day from partszilla.. I put them in the freshly cleaned up caliper and all is well.. No more sticky rear brake.. I was a bit worried I got the wrong parts when. I noticed the dust seal fits snugly around the piston in hand... But the oil seal is quite loose around the piston.. Once the seals were installed in the piston bores and the pistons pushed in it seemed OK..sure enough works good no leaks... This winter I will take the front left n right calipers apart.. Measure the pistons and order new seals for them as well....whoever did that rear caliper before I owned the bike had two different oil seals in there...no wonder it failed..

A lot of people have some misinformation apparently. The piston sizes you stated are correct, but the left front caliper(32mm) is independent not the right. On my 83 GL1100I the right front caliper(25.4mm) and rear caliper(32mm) are linked.

Just figured I'd let everyone know. I saw 3 or 4 posts in different threads that where saying that. When I pulled mine apart I was like "What the ?" Is mine backwards. So I did some research in the parts catalogs a service manuals to make sure I wasn't going batty.
