1980 GL1100 temp gauge won't register

Postby gwolfe » Sun Sep 14, 2014 10:19 pm

My 1980 GL1100 sat for several months without being ridden. I fired it up and took it for a ride...noticed during the ride that mr temp gauge was at cold after riding several miles. I placed a wire on the posts of the temp gauge with the ignition on...no movement...is this indicating the temp gauge is bad?...fuel gauge appears to be operating normally.

Take the wire off the temperature sensor on the block and connect it to ground (just push it against the engine will do). If the gauge goes up then, then the problem is with the sensor. If it does not, then the problem is either the gauge itself (not really likely), or a break in the wire somewhere between the gauge and the sensor (far more likely).
