81 GWI SHIMMEY

Postby sonnyboy » Tue Jul 21, 2009 5:43 pm

MY FRIEND HAS AN 81 INTERSTATE AND WE JUST SWITCHED FROM A DUNLOP TO A CONTI TOUR ON THE REAR. WE LEFT THE DUNLOP ON THE FRONT. HE NOW SAY'S THE BIKE SHIMMIES ABOVE 55MPH. IS THIS CAUSED BY A TIRE MISMATCH, OR SHOULD I BE LOOKING AT ANOTHER CAUSE?

It could be a tire mismatch, but more than likely the Dunlop on the front is cupped - that's almost always the cause of shimmies in 1100's.

Thanks,
The bike didn't shimmy (wind / truckwind sensitive ) until after the tire change. It did have the usual GW shimmy before. Any more thoughts on this?

I suppose it could be a defective new tire on the rear. But shimmies like that are typically caused by the front tire.
