82 gl1100 air compressor issues

Postby professor squidbeard » Mon Sep 15, 2014 10:55 pm

Hey everyone,

I've got an 82 aspencade 1100. Got it from an old widow in barely running condition. it's now idling and running as good as i'd hope for. I took the compressor off with the false tank while dealing with the scummy carbs. now i've hooked the compressor back up and checked with the diy article and everything seems to be cool. It makes a noise when i press the button to fill but it doesn't seem to actually be pushing air anywhere. if i press the decrease air button, i don't hear the hiss of air being released.

where should i even start here?

I would start by removing the output hose from the compressor, putting your finger over the outlet, running the compressor and seeing if it is actually pumping air.

no air.

what could have caused it to crap out i wonder? it worked before i took it off to fix the carbs, now nothing. frustrating.

alright, so i have replaced the bunk compressor. i'm getting air out of the hoses, no leaks. last night have taken the console and hoses out of the false tank and hooked them up to keep stuff out of the way and make it easier to work. i got pressure! it went up and down and everything was cool. i took it apart and hooked it back in to the false tank. now no pressure.

what am i missing? so frustrating!

Usually when I see something working one way, then reassembling it and it doesn't work, it's a stupid mistake on my part. Double check that everything is connected where it's supposed to be, and that all connections are tight. If it's all looking good, pull the outlet line off the compressor and make sure you're getting air pumped. If you are, hook everything up and spray some soapy water (I use a spray bottle with mostly water and a little bit of dish soap in it). If there is air leaking anywhere, it will bubble up and show you where.

i took it out of the false tank again and reseated all the hoses and made sure they were tight with soapy water. now it's all working again. i'm keeping it out of the false tank for now and just securing it to the frame inside of it. this is bananas.

It's possible one of the rubber hoses has a crack in it, and when it's bent a certain way, it opens up enough to leak air out. If it stops working again, hit it with the soapy water first before moving anything to identify what's going on.
