Harmonic Noise + Death Wobble

Postby moneypit » Tue Sep 30, 2014 1:54 pm

I posted about my 83 1100 I having a strange high pitch noise coming from the front end and really bad Death Wobble.
When I bought the old Moneypit it had Dunlop E3 tires on both ends the back was cupped from under inflation so I put on a Michelin Commander 2 on the rear. The front looked ok so I didn't change it . I put up with the Wobble and noise all summer . Today I changed the front tire to a Commander 2. I just got back from a test ride OMG the noise is gone and NO Death Wobble. I am absolutely in awe at how smooth the bike is . So If your going to change tires do yourself a favor and buy the Commander 2 you wont be sorry.

What size are you using on the 83?

THANKS! My concern was if the 130/70 would fit on the front. They make a 140/90 rear but not the 120/90 for the front. I've had the bike about a year and the E2s that it came with may or may not finish this riding season. I was considering Shinko Tourmasters but have heard a lot of good about the Commanders... I think for once in my life I'm not going to take the cheap route and will get the Commanders (sounds like it will help with the wobble issue too)

overdog..... you will have no problems with the 130 70 18 its a bit shorter and a bit wider but no clearance issues. the commander outlast the comp. and awesome on wet roads.

Monypit, thanks for the front tire info. I just put a set of Commander II's on my Virago and they definitely make a huge difference. I was looking to put them on my Wing when the time comes but did notice they did not come in the recommended size for the front. BTY, I'm curious about what size you put on the back. I would like to go with a little wider tire but will stick with recommended size that the Commander's come in if needed.

I too have been looking for tires. I have read a lot of good things in regards to the commander ll. it comes in the proper size for the rear tire, but not the front. Recommended size for the front is, 120/90-18. They do have a 130/70-18. Is that a wider tire? I wonder how it would be for handling . I'm still in the " slow and upright " stage when it comes to cornering and curves with this big boy. The guy from JP cycles is trying to talk me into the Metzler ME880 for my bike. Any feedback would be awesome . Tires are a great investment and for me a lot of money, but safety and a smooth ride are much more important !
