83 GL1100I Motor noise.

Postby 2ac911 » Wed Oct 01, 2014 7:35 pm

I had timing belts replaced last year. When I got the bike back it had what I can best describe as a lifter noise on the right side of the motor back cylinder. Brought it back and the mechanic said just ride it. Took it to another Gold Wing rider who also checked it out and could not find the source of the noise. I didn't ride at all this year because of the noise and a back issue but intend to ride next year and would like the noise to be fixed,

Does anyone have any ideas. Bent valve? Fuel pump? Would like to know what the noise is before I get the carbs done.

First thing I would do is check the compression numbers - that's relatively easy to do with no disassembly. If the chattering cylinder is down on compression, you can pretty much count on valve involvement. At that point I would pull the timing belt covers off and check that the cam wheels are in proper alignment.

Had the compression check and all 4 cylinders were within about 5 lbs. Had the garage check the timing belts again. They said everything was fine. Valve adj. was checked by the garage and another GL rider and both said the adj. was right on. This noise is much like a valve out of adj. That constant clicking noise. It increases the faster you go.

I still think there is a bent valve or someone suggested a fuel pump noise because the fuel pump is right where the noise is.
