blimkers headlight and brakelight have taken a dive

Postby serensct » Fri Oct 03, 2014 3:58 pm

ok I have an 83 gl 1100 it recently lost the blinkers and now it has lost headlight. blinkers I can still manually blink. but there is no power going to the blue or white or ground wire anymore. any suggestions where to start or which switches would be the culprit. rear tail light is still on but no rear brake light. I love this sight it is so helpful. everyone who replies I appreciate. Tryin to be ready for probably the last poker run or so of the year.

Is your horn still working?

I assume you have checked all of your fuses (remove them from the holder and check them for continuity).

If the fuses are working, I'm going to guess you have a bad ground somewhere. Anytime you have a bunch of unrelated electrical issues like this, the problem is usually a bad ground. Take a long wire, connect one end to the battery negative post, and start connecting the other end to green wires you find around the bike. If you do have a bad ground, at some point you will "fix" the bad ground with your test wire, and things will start working again. That will help you track down where the issue is.

Horn I think went also. I am going to try that im guessing it is a ground problem but even when I get power from elsewhere blinkers no longer blink im guessing its more then a ground-breaking

If one blinker bulb is out they won't blink and lack ground can cause that too. The blinker box needs to see the right circuit draw to blink.

Thank you, still tryin to track it down, they blink manually just not through the system. Curious how does it " lose " a ground.
