It looks to me like that has already been repaired, using some epoxy, and that some of that repair has failed. Is that in fact the case?

Is that the major problem with the restore? How bout the insides.?
Are they worth it?
Somebody (me) may have a extra cap and some insides laying about.

i've not opened it up yet will have a look over the weekend and see what its like. It seems from looking back over previous owners records that the starter motor has never been off the bike .

Well here's the part I have.a bit scratched up but intact.
Look at your gear head, planitairy gears and ring too.
This one was a take off from a 82 parts bike.
Let me know what you need.
I've never shipped to the uk so I have no idea the procedure or cost.
The stuff I have is of no value to me.

I have a couple of old starters too; for parts..shipping to UK is best with the USPS flat rate boxes not cheap but better than other rates.

But I'd pull it apart and check the commutator and case for shorts. Easy check would be to bench test it first before tearing it down if she turns a build is possible.
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,
RB

That's not right. The ground side doesn't have insulation, but the +12V side should definitely be insulated. See How to remove, rebuild and reinstall your starter

I can't think that any kind of internal failure catastrophic enough to punch a hole in the cover wouldn't also destroy other parts of the innards...so I would tend to think it is crash damage.
