Headlight bulb replacement - GL1100a Aspencade 1982

Postby bobbybiscuit » Tue Dec 02, 2014 7:09 am

I have read the articles on this site but do need some help please.

Because of the instrument panel preventing me accessing the little screw that is in the headlight adjuster, I went to take off the instrument panel above the adjuster and the locking nut on the fairing which was on the end of the bolt in the fairing dropped inside the fairing. I still have the other one to undo.

It looks like I will have to remove windscreen and anything else just to access the locking nuts for the instrument panel and even to replace the bulb.

Can anyone give me step by step guidance please. I know the locking nut holds the headlamp unit in place and that has to be removed. So if i remove instrument panel and nuts are inside fairing - how do I remove the nuts and reaffix them to allow the instrument panel to be reaffixed.

I assume you are talking about the four window panel that mounts on the center of the fairing..Not sure I get it...but you take the turn signals out to access the nuts that hold the panel in place, use a long arm magnet to retrieve the lost nuts or just get some new ones, I'd get wing nuts easier to deal with. Then loosen the set screw on the headlight adjustor knob take it off . Then loosen the nut on the headlight adjustor arm and the headlight should pull out from the front.

I checked to see whether my main beam was working and that was not so I am wondering whether my fuse has blown. What else is on the same circuit please?

It was too cold today to stand out messing around with the bike so will have another go tomorrow when hopefully its not so cold.

Nothing else is on the headlight circuit, it has its own fuse, and it powers both low and high beams, so be sure to check both.

Fuse had popped out of holder at one end. Was a bit dirty so I put a new fuse in and the great news is that both high and low beams work!!! woooo hoooo. Thank you for help.

Has anyone done a LED replacement of the headlamp system?

If so could you please post a HOW TO?

TIA

If you're just putting a LED bulb in place of the old bulb, the procedure isn't any different than replacing a light bulb. There are LED H4 bulbs available that should work fine, I haven't tried any to see how well they perform. From the video below however, it does appear to be a marked improvement.
