82 1100 Carb Cleaning

Postby Hoosier Jack » Tue Dec 09, 2014 10:50 pm

I took the carburetors off the bike today with the intention of giving them a good cleaning. I was surprised to see how nice they looked in there especially since the bike has not ran for a couple of years. The service manual suggests tearing the units apart but I don't really want to do that. I do intend to take out all of the jets, float pins, and replace the accelerator pump and blow everything out real good. Will I still be able to do a good job on these without the breakdown? From the looks of things I would have to do that if I were to replace the air cutoff valves, which I don't have.

Why did you pull the carbs? What symptoms, bad idle, running on less than 4 cylinders?
I pulled the carbs on my 2nd bike when I had these problems.Found clogged jets and passages, was able to clean up and blow compressed air thru the passages to open them up.Got the bike running pretty good but I still need to totally tear them apart sometime in the future to get them spot on.I just wanted to see if I could get the bike on the road quick,It was sitting for about 5 years.

That's not to far away from a complete teardown in itself!
If your going to all that trouble, you might as well go all the way and rebuild the carbs.
LOTS of info here on the process. Regards, Johnny

The bike had sat for quite a while, at least a couple of years. It would not start but had spark.

One question. I have not been able to get the needle jet out, the ones below the main jet. My manual says to push from below but I have not been able to get any of them out. They move somewhat. I tried a bit of penetrating oil to see if they would loosen but no luck so far. Any suggestions?
