What am I missing.....?

Postby rodee71 » Wed Dec 10, 2014 12:02 pm

Maybe it's a case of not seeing the forest for the trees, but, in addition to the electrical issue with my 93, this electrical problem with my 82 is killing me. So I turn the key on to start the bike, all lights are on, and as soon as I hit the starter, the headlight goes out and only comes on if I let the bike sit for an hour or so. At least, that was the case at first. After I replaced the bulb, it worked for a couple of rides. But now, when I just turn it on, no headlight at all, even after I replaced the bulb again. Every other light and the gauges works fine, just no headlight. Any thoughts? Again, thanks in advance.

Both high and low beams?
Power for the headlight come from the start button(switch),travel across to the high/low switch and then to the headlamp.
The common problem if neither high or low beam do not work is a bad start switch.
I have had good luck with cleaning them.

I'd have to look at the schematic for the color codes, but the harness at the throttle side has the power and feed wire for the headlight...I'd probe that first to see if power is leaving the start switch going to the high/low switch.
Got it...its a Blue with a white tracer....that should have power with the key on and NOT cranking.
It feeds the High/low switch.
Main power to the start switch for the headlight is black/red,it has its own fuse too.

It's actually a fairly common problem. The start button interrupts the headlight circuit, to give more power to the starter. When the start button gets worn or dirty, the headlight won't come back on.

Take it apart and hose it down with a quality electrical contact cleaner (NOT WD-40 - I use CRC) and see if it makes a difference.

Thanks to all again. Just one more maintenance job for the long , cold winter nights ahead. You have a great bunch of riders/contributors on here, Scott. Thanks for this venue. BTW, do you have a button I can push on the site in order to make a contribution to the kitty? I know it costs money to keep it going, and I'd like to do a little something to help. Let me know.

There's no such thing. Virtually all of the funds to keep the lights on this site come from advertising revenue. I'm not allowed to tell you to click on the advertisements on the site. However, if you do see an ad on the site now and then that interests you, I would encourage you to do what you think you should. :)

Can I be any more obtuse than that? :)

Please don't go clicking on 10 ads just to click on them - this actually causes fraud problems.

The exception to this is the three Amazon ads on the home page. If you are going to buy something from Amazon anyway, click on one of those ads to get to Amazon, and then make your purchase. A small percentage of your purchase then goes to fund the site, and it doesn't cost you anything.

Ok, that's good information to have. I do have an account on Amazon and will most likely go there (from here) to buy the remaining gifts I need to finish up this year's list. Thanks again for all you do and if I don't get a chance to tell you again, may you and yours have a blessed Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.

Another member just had problems with lights and such on his 1100, and it turned out to be a ground issue between the fairing and the frame of his motorcycle... definitely something worth checking out because it is important and cleaning and checking grounds doesn't cost money :-)

All the usual suspects, like dogbone fuse, loose positive wires or loose of faulty grounds will make you pull your hair out chasing ghosts until you find and fix them... I start at the battery and work my way toward the truoblesome piece until I figure out what is causing my truobles..
I am wrong as often as I am right concerning what is wrong with someone else' motorcycle without having seen the machine in person. Guessing with limited information, as to the source of the trouble, is sketchy at best.

some folks wire in relays to deal with the switching issue(s), or a weak link,

takes away then the normal strain there that promotes and or compounds any switch issues
