Exhaust smells bad

Postby Flyboy6 » Thu Dec 11, 2014 8:18 am

Working the kinks out of a 83 Aspencade, was driven lots, well maintained by PO, but sat for last riding season. Comps good (low-mid 150s), valve gaps set (some clunking on cold starts before I switched to lighter oil). Very little if any smoking, a tad white but barely. Exhaust stinks, and I'm not allowed back in the house with clothes on after running bike - in driveway or in garage. Is this normal? Throwing oil into air? No obvious exhaust leaks.

Can't find any threads on this but I'm new to site - happy to have any advice or be pointed to existing info.

When you say it smells bad - bad how? Does it smell like sulfur? Gas?

not sulphur - just really pronounced oily exhaust smell. Not gasoline - and everything is firing fine, engine smooth, firing on all 4 jugs, idling comfortably...

I suspect it's simply due to the fact that we're not used to what cars smelled like before the advent of catalytic converters. I know the exhaust of my GL1100 and GL1500 smells terrible, while the exhaust of my car hardly has any smell. Same thing when you smell the exhaust of a 1970's muscle car - the exhaust coming out with no catalytic converter in place smells terrible - and it's what all cars (and bikes) smelled like before catalysts were legislated into common use.

thx for reassurance - thought that might be the case. I'll hope that when I'm actually riding instead of tinkering in the shop the fresh breezes of the passing forests will be all I smell like afterwards. Glad that most of the 6 kajillion cars on the car catalytically convert all that crap into something less obnoxious.

Looking at all of the various threads on the topic, I should probably run some Seafoam through to de-gunk the carbs, might clean the combustion a bit. Plugs look fine.

I love the smell of the fumes out of the old Goldwing... it reminds me of a much simpler time in my life when the Government didn't have their nose up my tailpipe and I was a lot younger LOL... Smells a lot like freedom to me :-)
I am wrong as often as I am right concerning what is wrong with someone else' motorcycle without having seen the machine in person. Guessing with limited information, as to the source of the trouble, is sketchy at best.

Put 6-8 oz of atf in the gas tank. It will help clean the carbs also.
