84 1200 engine into 83 Aspencade - how hard?

Post by PurpleGL1200 » Wed Dec 24, 2014 1:21 pm

I'm considering converting an 83 Aspencade to a trike and putting an 84 1200I engine in it. The 84 & 83 engines seem to have the same electrical connections (except for the Aspencade gear position indicator). Is there something else I should consider before going further?

The 84 is a basket case; PO removed everything except fairing, wiring and wheels. I have most of the parts, but am not very enthusiastic about re-assembling it.

The 83 is complete and runs well, except for the air compressor for the shocks and forks. The 83 paint is good to excellent; the 84 will require a complete paint job.

I also have a good running 78 GL1000 and a daily rider 85 Interstate, so I can take my time on the conversion.

Yes, I do have a very understanding wife.

I read about a man who put a 1200 engine in an 1100 frame and he had to do a drive shaft modification and a few other tweaks, but it didn't sound all that complicated.

If you do this, and you find yourself with a running 1983 1100 engine that you no longer have any use for, I just know a guy who might want it.
I am wrong as often as I am right concerning what is wrong with someone else' motorcycle without having seen the machine in person. Guessing with limited information, as to the source of the trouble, is sketchy at best.

I have a 83 interstate with 86 1200 engine and it works fine.It looks to me to be the original
driveshaft and all the motormounts look like original.
My ride has been like this for many years, when I talked to
the po he said it wasn't to much work.
