Is this thermostat OK to use on my GL1100

Postby Aussie81Interstate » Wed Dec 31, 2014 6:32 pm

Hi guys,

I have just replaced timing belts- so thought what the heck - check and replace the thermostat at the same time as new radiator hoses.
I have two thermostats provided to me gratis from another forum for my CX500 Turbo project, and wanted to know if I can use this one on the GL1100.

I have measured the diameter and height of the old and the new as follows:
OLD- 52mm diameter - 43mm total height
NEW - 52mm diameter - 37.5mm total height
See the picture to show the differences - height only and the new one is offset to a small degree from being in the middle.

The new one is a Motorad Termostato 240-192
sample one on ebay

any thoughts would be appreciated

thanks

Your 240-192 is a 195 degree thermostat. 240-180 is a 180 degree thermostat. A stant 13868 or a Napa 101 is a 180 degree and has been used here. Make a note that the original thermostat, the hole is larger and in the center vs. the smaller hole and offset in the moto-rad. Also note that the moto is shorter in length. Now does this affect anything? I don't know, I have read here posts that report no problems and none so far with problems. Personally, if you have not had any cooling problems in the past, I would do a boil the water in the pan test with mommas favorite sauce pan and check the opening temp of the original and if its good go for it since this is the right opening temperature.

After doing a bit more research I may just reinstall the existing one. It was not locked open or covered in corrosion so should be good to re-use. The new one sits in the opening fine - and shouldn't be a problem to use apart from the operating temp differences

Thanks for your response - I'll go and put the original one back in now - with a new O ring as well.
