1200 motor in a GL1100?

Postby sw3dl1 » Fri Jan 02, 2015 10:48 am

I've just about finished building my GL1100 Standard and I'm looking forward to a new project.
I have a complete GL1100 frame and some associated parts, but I was looking at doing something a little different. I was toying with buying a GL1200 donor bike and using it to build a GL1100 with a 1200 motor.
Has anyone done this?
I know there will be challenges, i.e..,1200 hydraulic clutch, wiring issues, drive shaft, etc., etc. My main concern is, will the 1200 motor fit into the 1100 frame without a lot of cutting and welding.
I'm pretty conservitive, I want the project to be clean, un-assuming and factory like.
Open to thoughts...

Someone asked this question about a week ago. I've never done it, but have heard it isn't hard to do it. Another member said he had done it... I recall reading that there was a difference in the drive shaft, but that the engine basically fits without a lot of modification to the frame... like close to none.
I am wrong as often as I am right concerning what is wrong with someone else' motorcycle without having seen the machine in person. Guessing with limited information, as to the source of the trouble, is sketchy at best.

Hawkeye,
Thanks for getting back to me.
I've asked a few of my Goldwing friends about this swap and they say pretty close to the same thing. I'm looking for a good 1200 at a reasonable price as we speak. It seems there are no shortage of motors, but the shipping drives the price up substantially.
I believe it would be a fun project. Now I'm thinking about fuel injection or carbueration. I guess the motor I finally end up with will dictate how it is aspirated.

I just sent a message to a local motorcycle "recycle yard" to see if they have a decent running 1200 engine to try this swap over on my 1100... it's either put a 1200 engine in it, or hold out for a 1983 GL1100 engine (final drive is better in my mind) to do this swap with.

I would be very interested in seeing your mod, if you get to it before I do...

Please keep us posted on your progress.

I got a little side tracked with another project, but I'm still looking for a GL1200 to buy.
I'm of the mind to buy a whole bike for all the electrical compountants and them find a good motor to go into the bike.
I'll be done with the project i'm on presently in the next couple of weeks then I plan on getting the 1100/1200 project up and running.
