Valve cover oil leak

Postby zvacman » Sat Jun 12, 2010 7:13 pm

I have aftermarket valve covers (came with bike). I had a leak only on the right side so I replaced the gasket with a genuine Honda gasket. The leak is the same if not worse. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Z

By the way, the oil seems to be coming out right around the fuel pump.

Thanks, Z

Could be the fuel pump to head gasket, also check the tach cable oil seal where the cable comes out of the fuel pump. Mine has small leaks on both places.

I was under the impression that the oil in the valve cover and fuel pump area are not under any significant amount of pressure. In about 10 minutes of run time this thing has leaked a puddle a little bit bigger than a dinner plate. I wonder if the aftermarket chrome valve covers just don't fit as good as factory ones. I'm going to pull it off again tonight, does anyone think I should use a high temp permatex sealant around the cover? Is the fuel pump gasket still available?

Thanks, Z

The valve cover gaskets are quite squishy - they compress a fair bit when the covers are installed, so if they are new, I doubt they are leaking unless the aftermarket valve covers are severely compromised.

The fuel pump gasket (part number 1 in the picture) is still available, it's part number 12390-371-405, and can be found online from several parts outlets.

Here's an update. The outside bolt on fuel pump is so stripped I can turn it with my fingers. Heli-coil?? Is there a product that I can put on a new bolt to restore the threads? Secondly, in the schematic that Windadmin posted item #1 is the "gasket". Mine had two of them and they are not of any kind of gasket material they are hard plastic. Is it supposed to be hard plastic, and does it take one or two of them? My Honda dealer is kind of a jerk and laughed at me when I asked if he could order a new gasket for me, besides that he is an hour each way from me. I must first address the stripped bolt problem.

Any help, Z

Here's a picture of the hard plastic things I was talking about.
