Clicking sound when riding at constant speed.

Postby wishbone63 » Wed Feb 11, 2015 7:05 pm

I have a new problem. My 1983 GL1100i is running perfect except when I am not accelerating or decelerating. If I am at a constant speed and no load on the bike, I get a clicking sound that sounds like gears not meshing. It happens mostly in 5th gear. Any Ideas as to what is the cause?

Anyway you could lightly rest you foot on the shifter? If so, see if the clicking is transmitting through the shaft. Might help isolate it to the tranny or somewhere else. Just a thought.

THE 1100 AND 1200 BIKES HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE REAR BEARING WEARING THE INSIDE OF THE HUB TO A LARGER DIAMETER ,,YOU COULD SHIM THEM EVENLY OR HONDA SUPPLIED AN OVERSIZE BRG ,, NORMALLY YOU CAN NOT HERE THE CLICKING EXCEPT VERY SLOW SO THIS MAY NOT APPLY TO YOUR CLICKING ,,

I REPLIED ABOUT THE BEARINGS ,,BUT AT 55 AND NO ENGINE PRESSURE YOU MAY HAVE A LOSE ( STRETCHED INTERNAL CHAIN ) UNDER PRESSURE THE CHAIN IT PULLED TIGHT AND EVEN THROTTLE THE CHAIN CAN HAVE SLACK ,,NOT AND EASY JOB TO REPAIR ,, I WOULD LOOK FOR A LOW MILEAGE ENGINE ,,,IF THAT IS THE CASE..

Thanks for the advice. I will check out all the suggestions. Hope I don't need to replace the engine.

It sounds like drive line trouble to me.
Pull the drive shaft rubber boot (between engine and swing arm) back and check the universal joint. Any signs of metallic dust or play here and you need another shaft.
If you need one, I have a good 83 one (yes, there is a difference between early and late 1100 shafts)

A clicking when not under load is usually a sign of a failing universal joint on the driveshaft.

Get up to speed where you hear it, then pull the clutch in and listen. Usually the noise will not go away - which means the problem is isolated to the drivetrain, not the engine or transmission.

I SENT YOU THE REPLY SUGGESTING THE INTERNAL CHAIN ,,AFTER FURTHER THOUGHT THE PREVIOUS SUGGESTION OF PULLING IN THE CLUTCH AND LISTENING IS A GOOD SUGGESTION,, I WORK ON A LOT OF OLD WINGS AND THAT MAKES SENSE TO ME ,,ISOLATE THE NOISE IS A GOOD SUGGESTION ,,

You might place the bike on the center stand, start the bike, run it through the gears and listen with a stethoscope to get a better listen... Probably won't have to get out of first to hear it... Or not... I bought a cheap S-scope at Harbor freight for like $5.00... :D

I found the problem. It was the improperly torqued swing arm bolts. I put it on the center stand and ran it while listening and was able to isolate where the sound was coming from. After I torgued the bolts according to the shop manual, the sound went away and it seems to be running like it should. Thanks for all the advice. This forum is great.

Were they loose? I suppose if they were loose, allowing the swingarm pivot center to move to a slightly different place than the universal joint inside it, it could cause the joint to click.

That's just weird. Where exactly did you hear the sound coming from?

They were both tight. I did not check what they were. I just loosened both sides and re-torqued according to the shop manual. The sound completely went away. Hope
That was the problem because it seems fine now with no other issues.

I suppose if it got loose enough it would go side to side making a clicking sound... Maybe that's what occurred,, Don't know.. I remember having to use a bloody cheater pipe to get the one sides bolt loose, good gurdy that sucker was on there..

Impact wrench. :) That's what it took to undo the one on my GL1100.

I would never tell someone what they need to do,, ,, I would like to tell what I would do though,, especially if this happened to me,, I would have to pull the whole swingarm and inspect and regrease or even replace the bearings if there was any type of noise coming from that area,, (they could be dry)...That's what I would have done... It's a real pain but I would do it.. Might be just fine tightening it down though...it's because I'm a loon.... I have to ask , Was there any side to side movement in the swingarm when on the centerstand? Impacts are the trick,,, usually if I can't get it with a cheater,, Next step is just that...

I did remove the swing arm, examined the bearings and regeased. I could not feel any side to side movement by hand before. But with the bike on the center stand with the engine running in 4th gear the sound came from that area. So I decided to remove the swing arm and re-install according to the shop manual. This fixed the problem. I have ridden it about 200 miles since and it seems fine.
