timing sprocket gl 1100 1980

Are the left and right sprockets different?? I bought this bike knowing that it needed a new belt and sprocket but the one i was given has an R on it and there is wear on the housing behind it like it had been rubbing for a long time. Are they different?

Thanks. Could the wrong sprocket have caused the rubbing? Just got this bike never had a gold wing before

I don't think so. Could you post a picture of the rubbed area?

There is only one sprocket that I am aware of for the 1980 gl1100, and that is the reason for timing marks and the word "up" on both sides, as it is reversible. Be sure you use the correct mark on the (R) side that has 2 marks. The marks to use may have a small arrow pointing towards them. Wrong mark bends valves...The (R) faces forward on the right side. Study first...!
My exercise bike is a goldwing.
