No Power, fuses OK

Postby apemummy » Wed Feb 18, 2015 8:08 am

Hi all, this is my first post to this great forum and unfortunately a call for assistance. New to wings, not new to bikes.

I rescued an '83 Interstate last summer. It wasn't in bad shape but surely would have sat until the end of time had I not pulled it out from it's hiding place. Long story short after a new starter, plugs, brakes, battery and new SOLENOID, the bike was doing well and I enjoyed it for the rest of the summer without issue. Always starts instantly and performs like new-ish.

Fast forward to recently. Went to start the bike and it cranked fine but wouldn't start - very unusual for this bike. Turned the key off for a moment, and when I turned it back on there was no power at all, anywhere. Checked the main fuse at the solenoid and it's OK, all other fuses OK. Everything appears to be OK, but no power. Battery is good, high quality, and kept on a tender. The new replacement solenoid is definitely one of those cheap chinese ones - are those known to go bad and not pass power? Are the key switches known to fail or is there some other likely component which would cause this upon failure?

I have yet to prod around with a volt meter and/or test light because now it's about -2 F in the garage. I figured I'd ask if there's a common problem first, cause it's really, really cold 8-)

I'd check the main ground at the frame first, off the batteries line
, mine had gunk and rust up underneath the bolt at the frame., that's the heart right there,,, clean it up good.. then retry then go to the next item,,, Positive....

Yup, I'd go with the ground as well. Also check the battery cables themselves, they can corrode internally where it doesn't show. Unfortunately, most of the checks that help solve this are going to involve time spent in cold temperatures with a meter. :)

I put the cheap Chinese solenoid on my bike and it worked for about 9 months. Replaced with OEM and have had no problems since.
