Setting the idle speed

Postby emt613 » Tue Jun 15, 2010 8:54 pm

Should the Idle be adjusted when the engine is cold or fully warmed up? After a ten mile warm up, my 83 aspy will idle at about 2000rpm, I am pretty sure this is too high. What is proper?

The manual says 950-1050. 2000 is a bit high, mine is all over the place right now (just rebuilt the carbs. I'm going for 1000 warm.

Idle is set with the engine at operating temperature. Should be about 950-1000.

'Impossible' is just a level of difficulty! The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask first!

This may sound a little basic but how do you set the idle speed? Is there a specific screw or do you do while syncing the carbs?

There's a screw on the rear of the carburetor assembly, that limits the travel of the bellcrank (the thing that is moved when you move the throttle twist grip), and can be seen from the right side of the bike. It has a spring around the screw that supplies pressure to keep it in the place you set it.
