oil dip stick for GL1100

Postby roadwanderer2 » Sat Feb 28, 2015 10:45 am

I saw something on eBay that im thinking about getting for my gl1100. its an oil dip stick, but can someone tell me where it would bolt up at? sure would make checking the bike's oil level much easer than having to get on the ground to view the oil thru that stupid little sight glass.

hello stuart
My one GL1100 came with dip stick. It mounts to drain plug hole and dip stick runs up in front of radiator with a cross mount to radiator.
I seen one on ebay last week in a pile of bolts and nuts the seller was selling a whole pile of stuff but email wanting just dip stick and he said no.

They bolt in place of the drain bolt:

There's a compression fitting in there, so you just unbolt the dipstick when you change your oil:

I had one on my GL1100 (in the pictures) and it made checking your oil level SO much easier!

ya know, I don't understand why sometimes these sellers wont sell just what you need. don't they realize that the would be making more $$ if they sell just one piece out of the lot?. I've even told a few of them that they can still make money selling the rest of their items without the one piece. guess its too much trouble for them. I look at it this way.....their loss.

the 2 that I saw on eBay didn't have the compression fittings on them and one said it would need the 45* angle fitting to make it work. these are the 2 that I found.......191240475707 and the other one is.............361141934685 so im wondering which one of the 2 would be better for me. HOLD ON A SEC, wingadmin, yours is different than mine. my engine has a bolt that unscrews to open to drain the oil not a threaded one like the one in your pics unless you had a plug adaptor installed on the engine.

My dipstick does not look like that either. I took out the oem drain plug and screwed the dipstick part into the same hole where the drain plug came out.

well, all I can say is one way or another, im gonna get me an oil dip stick. wish they came as standard equipment on these older wings cause that sight glass is a pain in the a** to look thru. ya would think that with all the innovations Honda made, they would of thought of a better way to check the oil. leave it up to the designers to make it almost impossible.

I cut the steel tube off 3/4" from the correct oil level and added a pvc tube, I used a hose clamp.... The level will show 3/4" above the cut mark.... How did I achieve the mark for the level height? I used a water level.. I had Amanda or was it Olivia hold one side at the correct height at the sight cap and transferred the level mark to the tubing... I also checked and measured the original dip stick just to confirm accuracy....Someone was concerned about it melting,,, naw, I had it on for a few years now and by the time the oil gets in the tube it's cooling off, and when the engine is on, it's drawn into the engine.. No sign of anything melting.... Then I made a cover with a window to protect it from flying stones ect... You can just turn the cover and pull the window out of sight...that what I did because I got sick of even the dip stick..(impatient)....So I ruined a perfectly good dip stick tube for my benefit...Big deal right...lol Maybe this will spark an idea for you and your mod. Oh someone could use just a regular 2' level and just transfer a mark that way...
