Paint Help 83 GL 1100A

Postby ricconhan » Sat Feb 28, 2015 11:41 am

Thanks in advance for looking and possibly being able to help.
I have a 1983 Honda Goldwing Aspencade 1100A

I think the paint code is "Sorrel Brown Metallic, YR116MU " I am assuming that would be the darker brown color but I have no idea what the lighter goldish color would be. Also trying to cross reference 30+ year old paint code is difficult and my paint guy is not having much success. He did take one of my lids and had the picture taken where they can diagnose the color. Is that the only way to cross reference the paint code now or does somebody have any clue what color code would work for the two colors. I am in the process of having my side car painted to match the bike and although I'm not a perfectionist and it's not going to be a show bike I would like to get as close as possible. Any help would be appreciated greatly.

Thanks Rick

rick, your correct with the color code. the easiest way to get a closest match on the other color, which is decal placed on from the factory, take your saddlebag lid to an auto body paint supply shop and have them take a digital photo of it and copy it so they can match it up with the closest shade to it. that's how I had to have my bikes decal copied since they are no longer available thru the manufacturer. they can actually make up a spray can of the exact color match for you, at least the place where I took mine did for me. here are some stock numbers for the decals, one of them is the color you'll need if you can get them......61101-MB9-950ZC. that is for the front fender. you'll have to check as my charts don't show the color for that number only the part number. there's a whole list of numbers for them, but none of them coincide with the colors.

Thanks Stuart, my paint guy took one of my lids and they did the digital photo and are cross referencing both colors getting codes trying to come close. According to him DuPont can't even cross reference the Honda number that's listed with the sorrel brown metallic, stating it's too old for them to cross reference. so I guess the digital photo is the way we're going to have to go.

Thanks Rick

being as the bike is so old, all the paint numbers will be out of date and not available. digital photo imaging is the only way you'll be able to come close to the original stock color. good luck with it, im sure you'll find after they make up a batch, it will be VERY close to the stock color you have on your bike. might be a shade lighter or darker, but very close. i'll tell you what I can do, I have the direct phone number to the Honda motorcycle corp. that's out in California, I can give them a call on Monday to try and find out what the color is on the stock sorrel brown decals. cant promise anything, but i'll try.

Thanks, that would be great. I'm sure that my paint guy will get close enough for me, but the actual number would be great. Right now it looks like Mutt & Jeff, bike one color and sidecar another, just wanted to have them similar, I'm a little bit anal about how I look. ...lol

Thanks Rick

I have found out that the decal insets are Harvest Gold Metallic YR115MU and the darker brown color is Sorrel Brown Metallic YR116MU. My paint guy has got the paint mixed up using the digital photo analysis and is going to shoot a couple of test panels to see how close we are, so we're getting close and I have found a design that I like and we're going to try to see how it will go with the bike. Here are a couple of pictures of the design I am going to try. Any suggestions are welcome.
Of course on mine the Sorrel Brown Metallic (darker brown) will be the base coat and the decal or insets will be the Harvest Gold Metallic

I finally have the light bar I need to design and build the bumper/light bar for the rear end of the sidecar, I have been looking for one similar to the bike bags or trunk lights that are on my bike. The light bumper I got has the same lights as mine and should look good, I think it will give it a more finished look and look like they belong together. Here is a picture of what I'm shooting for, or similar, and a picture of the rear of my bike.

I have seen a few of those listed on eBay once in a while. when I see another one, I will send you the item number for it so you can take a look at it.

So I understand, I have an 86 Aspencade. On the rear trunk, the "decal?" is worn and faded. First off, is it a decal that can be removed? And second,
can you get a replacement decal?

Thx

joe
